Youth Programs

Second Step Hawaii

Built on evidence of success, Second Step Hawaii is a partnership with elementary and middle schools to reduce and prevent violence and associated risk factors impacting youth. This after-school program gives students the opportunity to be part of a respectful learning environment with peers to explore topics in self-awareness, friendships, empathy, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, emotion management, bullying prevention, and substance abuse prevention. The curriculum focuses on helping children maintain positive relationships, reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior; it also seeks to increase social competence. With assistance from Kamehameha School’s Health, Wellness and Family Education Division, the curriculum has been adapted for Hawaii’s island culture. The Second Step Hawaii program includes after-school sessions for youth, family nights, youth sports activities, community service projects, and community events.
